Anglo American

London-headquartered diversified miner that traces its roots to Johannesburg, where Ernest Oppenheimer founded the Anglo American Corporation in 1917. After demerging its platinum business as Valterra Platinum in 2025 and agreeing to sell its steelmaking coal unit, the group is reshaping itself around copper, premium iron ore and crop nutrients while preparing to merge with Teck Resources to form Anglo Teck.

Its main African businesses are Kumba Iron Ore, which runs the Sishen and Kolomela mines in South Africa's Northern Cape, and an 85% stake in De Beers, whose mines are in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa (the diamond unit is being sold). Outside Africa it mines copper in Chile and Peru and iron ore at Minas-Rio in Brazil. The shares also trade on the JSE under the code AGL, and completion of the Teck merger is targeted between September 2026 and March 2027, with Chinese anti-trust approval the last regulatory hurdle.
