Anglo American cut its final tie to South African platinum on 4 September 2025, placing about 52 million shares in Valterra Platinum with institutional investors at an average of R845 each. The sale raised R44.1bn, which the Wall Street Journal and other outlets reported as roughly $2.5bn. Buyers received a discount of almost 9% to Valterra's closing price of R924.28 the day before.
From demerger to exit
Valterra is the former Anglo American Platinum. Anglo demerged the majority of its stake to its own shareholders at the end of May 2025, with Valterra shares starting to trade in London on 2 June alongside the existing Johannesburg primary listing. Anglo kept about 19.9% and promised not to sell for at least 90 days. It announced the bookbuild on 3 September, as soon as that lock-up expired.
The timing suited Anglo. Platinum and palladium had risen 58% and 19% respectively in 2025 by then, and Valterra's share price was up about 63% for the year, giving the company a market value of about R225bn.
Why it matters
The sale is part of the restructuring Anglo launched in 2024 while fending off BHP, under which it is exiting platinum, diamonds, steelmaking coal and nickel to concentrate on copper, premium iron ore and crop nutrients. Chief executive Duncan Wanblad described the placing as further progress in a responsible separation.
For the JSE, the transaction was one of the largest share placements on record and put a big block of Valterra stock into the hands of local and foreign funds, widening the free float of the world's largest integrated PGM producer. Valterra now stands alone, without a controlling shareholder, as it works through a period of stronger metal prices.
