Rosh Pinah switches on new water treatment plant

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation successfully commissioned a new water treatment plant at its mine in southern Namibia on 12 May 2026, adding to a series of infrastructure upgrades under way as part of the RP2.0 expansion project. The plant is designed to manage water pumped from the mine's growing underground workings as extraction rates increase.

An unglamorous but essential upgrade

Water management is a routine but critical requirement for any expanding underground mine, since higher extraction rates typically bring more groundwater into contact with mined areas. Treating that water properly protects both the surrounding environment in Namibia's arid southern region and the mine's own equipment and infrastructure from the corrosive effects of untreated mine water.

The water treatment plant followed the February 2026 commissioning of Namibia's first paste backfill plant at the same site, part of a steady drumbeat of infrastructure milestones as Rosh Pinah's owner, Appian Capital Advisory, pushes RP2.0 toward completion. Together, the new plants reflect the scale of supporting infrastructure required to nearly double a mine's throughput, well beyond the headline investment in mining and processing equipment.

Why it matters

Namibia's arid climate makes responsible water management a particularly sensitive issue for the country's mining industry, and new treatment capacity at Rosh Pinah reduces the risk of environmental non-compliance as the mine ramps up. For a company aiming to nearly double throughput, having water infrastructure in place before higher production rates arrive reduces the risk of operational bottlenecks later.

What happens next

With both the paste backfill and water treatment plants now operating, Rosh Pinah's remaining RP2.0 milestones point toward completion of the wider expansion in the third quarter of 2026, after which the mine will begin ramping up toward its target of 1.3-million tonnes of ore processed a year.
