What Orano does
French state-controlled nuclear fuel-cycle company created in 2017 from the restructuring of Areva. It is the world's third-largest uranium producer, though its Niger business has been largely dismantled by that country's military government since 2023.
Orano formerly operated the Somaïr, Cominak and Imouraren uranium projects in Niger through joint ventures with the state agency Sopamin; Niger stripped Orano of operational control in 2024 and moved to nationalise Somaïr outright in June 2025, a move Orano has contested through international arbitration.
