Volvo Group Establishes Dedicated Mining Business

Volvo Group will launch a dedicated mining business on 1 January 2027, bringing its trucks, construction equipment and autonomous solutions under one organisation to serve mining companies and contractors.

The new entity, Volvo Mining, will operate within Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) and initially target customers in Sweden, Norway and Finland. The company plans to expand into additional markets in phases.

Announced on 19 October, the move gives Volvo Group a central structure to manage its mining equipment and services portfolio, coordinate research projects and combine capabilities from across its businesses. Volvo Mining will have dedicated financial resources and responsibility for the Group’s global mining product and service portfolio.

Trucks, Equipment and Automation

The new business will bring together offerings from Volvo Trucks, Volvo CE and Volvo Autonomous Solutions. These cover equipment and transport requirements across mining operations, including loading, hauling and material transportation, alongside autonomous technologies.

Volvo says the structure will help it provide more integrated solutions as mine operators seek to improve productivity, strengthen safety and reduce emissions. Coordinating equipment, transport and automation within one business will also give the Group a more focused approach to developing products and services for mining customers.

Volvo already has experience with autonomous material transport in mining-related operations. Its autonomous solutions have been used in applications including Boliden’s Garpenberg mine in Sweden and Brønnøy Kalk’s quarry in Norway. The new entity will bring this experience together with the Group’s wider equipment and truck portfolio.

Per-Erik Lindström to Lead the Business

Per-Erik Lindström, currently senior vice-president of Volvo Trucks International, has been appointed head of Volvo Mining, effective 1 January 2027.

Melker Jernberg, president of Volvo CE, said the mining industry’s growing importance required greater focus from the Group. Volvo Trucks president Roger Alm also pointed to the long-term nature of mining investments and the need for suppliers to understand customers’ operations.

Volvo Mining will initially concentrate on the Nordic countries before expanding into other markets. The company has not yet announced a detailed rollout schedule for those additional markets.
