BME Advances Electronic Blasting Technology With VIPERTRON

BME, the explosives and blasting solutions business within Omnia Holdings, has developed VIPERTRON, an electronic initiation system designed to improve blast timing, precision and reliability at mines and quarries.

The system targets operations still using conventional non-electric initiation methods, where greater control over the timing of individual charges can help improve blasting accuracy. Electronic initiation technology allows blast sequences to be programmed with precise delays, giving blasting teams more control over how energy is released across a blast pattern.

Electronic Initiation Targets Greater Blasting Precision

For mining operations, blast timing affects fragmentation, vibration and the movement of broken rock. Better control can help mines manage fragmentation requirements and reduce the risk of inconsistent blasting outcomes. Actual performance depends on site conditions, blast design and how the system is deployed.

Portable Training Unit Supports Underground Safety

BME has also developed a portable training unit for underground charging equipment. The unit allows operators to practise responding to equipment faults and carrying out emergency shutdown procedures in a training environment.

This gives workers an opportunity to familiarise themselves with equipment controls and emergency responses without having to rely solely on training during live underground operations. The approach is particularly relevant in environments where equipment faults and emergency situations require operators to respond quickly and follow established safety procedures.

VIPERTRON was announced in September, making this an update on BME's blasting technology development rather than a new product launch this week. The electronic initiation system and portable training unit address different parts of the blasting process: control over blast execution and operator preparedness when working with underground charging equipment.
