Endeavour Mining commits to $2bn shareholder return programme as gold surges
The West African gold miner has locked in rising minimum dividends through 2028, with buybacks on top whenever bullion trades above $3,000 an ounce
Endeavour Mining, the London- and Toronto-listed operator of gold mines across Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Senegal, told investors in April 2026 that it expects to return at least $2bn to shareholders by 2028 under an expanded capital return programme. The framework sets a minimum dividend of $300m for the 2026 financial year, rising to $325m in 2027 and $350m in 2028, to be paid semi-annually provided the gold price for the relevant period stays at or above $3,000 an ounce.
Buybacks layered on top
Beyond the minimum dividend floor, Endeavour has said supplemental returns, in the form of both additional dividends and opportunistic share buybacks, will follow whenever gold trades above that $3,000 threshold, which it has done for most of 2025 and 2026. Chief executive Ian Cockerill said the roughly $2bn total, made up of the committed minimum payouts plus an estimated $1bn of supplemental returns, reflected confidence in the company's free cash flow generation at prevailing prices. The company renewed its share buyback mandate in March 2026, giving itself approval to repurchase up to 18.2 million shares, about 10% of its public float, over the following year, and has continued to execute small daily buyback tranches through its brokers since.
Funding the payouts
Endeavour's ability to commit to a multi-year, price-linked dividend floor reflects the scale of the cash gold above $3,000 an ounce generates across its West African mine network, without requiring it to draw down cash earmarked for growth projects such as the Assafou development in Côte d'Ivoire. The structure also gives investors a clearer read on capital allocation than discretionary, results-by-results dividend decisions.
Why it matters regionally
Endeavour's returns framework is part of a broader pattern across West African-focused gold miners, alongside Montage Gold's project financing and Zijin's acquisition spree, of international capital flowing more confidently into the region on the back of record bullion prices, even as some of the same countries pursue tougher mining codes and higher state participation in new projects.
The commitment also puts pressure on rival West African gold producers to match or exceed Endeavour's payout framework, at a time when investors have grown more demanding about capital discipline across the sector following years in which many miners prioritised growth spending over consistent shareholder returns.
