Friedland is the American-Canadian financier who founded Ivanhoe Mines and co-chairs its board; he also heads the family-owned Ivanhoe Capital. Ivanhoe's discoveries in the DRC, notably Kamoa-Kakula and the Western Forelands, are the core of his African business, and in September 2026 Ivanhoe said it was talking to big technology companies as it expanded the Makoko copper resource.
