Rising volumes, falling prices: Guinea's 2026 bauxite paradox
Record shipments have not stopped bauxite prices sliding to $38-39 a tonne as oversupply and freight costs bite

Guinea's bauxite miners are producing more than ever in 2026, yet earning less per tonne for it. Fastmarkets' weekly free-on-board Guinea bauxite price assessment, launched on 19 December 2025 at an initial $44-46 a dry tonne, had slipped to $33-38 a dry tonne by late March 2026 and was holding around $38-39 a tonne through the middle of the year.
Oversupply after a rally
The price weakness follows a rally in bauxite prices the previous year that encouraged aggressive expansion by Guinea's major producers. With Société Minière de Boké, Chalco and Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée all lifting volumes, and Guinea's overall exports on track to exceed 200-million tonnes for 2026, supply has simply outpaced demand growth, even from China's expanding alumina refining sector.
Freight costs bite from the other side
At the same time, producers have faced sharply higher costs of getting bauxite to market. Freight rates from West Africa to China have risen by about $8 a tonne, while rates on the Australia-to-China route are up $4-5 a tonne, with typical Guinea-to-China freight now ranging $15-25 a tonne depending on vessel availability and fuel costs. Industry participants at Fastmarkets' 2026 Bauxite & Alumina conference said rising freight and bunker fuel costs were beginning to provide some support to upstream prices, even as oversupply concerns persisted.
A new benchmark for a maturing market
The launch of a dedicated FOB Guinea bauxite price benchmark marks a step toward greater transparency in a market that has historically relied on opaque, individually negotiated contracts. As Guinea cements its position as the supplier of around half of the seaborne bauxite trade, a liquid, widely referenced price benchmark matters increasingly to producers, traders and Chinese alumina refiners alike.
What it means for producers
Smaller Guinean bauxite miners, without the scale of SMB, CBG or Chalco, are likely to feel the price-cost squeeze most acutely, potentially accelerating industry consolidation even as the country's total export volumes keep climbing.
