Petra Diamonds retrenchments put 1,800 jobs at risk at Finsch and Cullinan
Labour group Solidarity says the cuts, alongside restructuring at Sibanye-Stillwater and De Beers, could affect more than 4,000 mining jobs this year

Approximately 1,800 jobs are at risk at Petra Diamonds' Finsch and Cullinan mines, labour group Solidarity said on 9 September 2026, as the diamond miner joins a wave of South African companies restructuring operations this year. The figure emerged as Solidarity tallied the cumulative toll of retrenchment processes announced across the sector in mid-2026.
Petra Diamonds has faced years of financial pressure from weak rough-diamond prices, high debt levels and, more recently, from US tariff measures that have complicated diamond sales and further squeezed margins. Finsch and Cullinan, both historic South African diamond mines, are central to Petra's remaining production base, making cuts there a significant blow to the company's already-stretched operations.
Part of a wider retrenchment wave
The Petra job losses came to light alongside two other major restructuring processes: Sibanye-Stillwater's move to close its Kwezi platinum shaft near Rustenburg, putting 1,114 employees and contractors at risk, and De Beers' two-year production pause at its Venetia diamond mine, which threatens around 1,214 jobs. "We are therefore talking about more than 4,000 employees and contractors who could be affected by these three developments alone," said Solidarity's Willie Venter, describing the pattern as "a worrying loss of job security in an industry on which thousands of families and communities depend."
A safety dimension to job insecurity
Venter linked the wave of retrenchments directly to mine safety, arguing that uncertainty over jobs "places enormous pressure on mineworkers and could also affect their attention and focus in an already dangerous working environment." He noted that South Africa had already recorded more mining fatalities in 2026 than during the whole of the previous year, suggesting that financial pressure on companies and psychological pressure on workers may be compounding each other at a difficult time for the industry.
What happens next
Section 189 consultation processes typically run for weeks to months before final retrenchment numbers are confirmed, meaning the ultimate job losses at Finsch and Cullinan, as at Kwezi and Venetia, could still be reduced through negotiation, redeployment or voluntary severance. Solidarity said it would monitor all three processes and push for alternatives to outright job losses wherever possible, while acknowledging the underlying commercial pressures, ageing reserves, weak diamond prices and cost inflation, that are driving the cuts.
