Pan African Resources agrees A$311m deal for Australia's Emmerson Resources
The JSE- and LSE-listed gold producer moves to consolidate its Tennant Creek foothold and take an ASX listing of its own

Pan African Resources, the JSE- and London-listed gold producer best known for its South African tailings retreatment and Barberton operations, agreed to acquire Emmerson Resources in a scheme of arrangement valued at roughly A$311m (about $218m). The deal, still working through Australian court and shareholder processes during 2026, is intended to conclude in July 2026 and would give Pan African full ownership of the prospective Tennant Creek mineral field in the Northern Territory, ending a joint-venture structure the company had described as an obstacle to faster development.
Why Tennant Creek
Pan African already held an interest in Tennant Creek through its Warrego project, the largest copper and gold resource in the district, but shared exposure with Emmerson under an existing joint venture. Buying out Emmerson entirely removes that complexity and consolidates decision-making over exploration and development timelines in the company's hands. As part of the same push into the district, Pan African separately bought a 15% strategic stake in ASX-listed CuFe for about A$15.35m in May 2026, a company whose Gecko and Orlando projects sit near Warrego and offer further consolidation potential.
An ASX listing to follow
Pan African has said it intends to pursue a listing on the Australian Securities Exchange alongside completion of the Emmerson deal, a step that would give it a direct link to Australian capital markets and investors already familiar with Tennant Creek's geology, rather than relying solely on its JSE and London listings to fund Australian growth.
What it means for a South African gold house
The transaction continues a pattern among South African-rooted gold miners of looking beyond the country's ageing deep-level operations for growth, echoing Harmony Gold's move into Australian copper. For Pan African, whose core production remains anchored in Mpumalanga and Free State surface and underground gold operations, Tennant Creek offers a second growth leg in a stable, established mining jurisdiction at a time when gold prices near record highs are funding overseas expansion across the sector.
Investors will be watching how quickly Pan African can integrate Emmerson's Tennant Creek assets and translate the consolidated ownership into faster drilling and development decisions, a key test of whether the Australian diversification strategy delivers the growth the company has promised alongside its established South African gold business.
