
Thornton, a former president of Goldman Sachs, joined Barrick in 2014 and helped engineer its merger with Randgold Resources. As chairman he oversaw the 2025 departure of Mark Bristow and the subsequent reset under Mark Hill, which included settling the Loulo-Gounkoto dispute with Mali and pursuing a separate listing of the North American mines.
