Southern Palladium wins 30-year mining right for Bengwenyama PGM project
The Eastern Limb developer can now push ahead with its feasibility study and early works on a two-phase mine

Southern Palladium has been granted a mining right for its Bengwenyama platinum group metal (PGM) project on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex, a milestone that allows the developer to move towards construction.
The company announced on 11 August 2026 that the right, awarded by the South African government, runs for 30 years. Managing director Johan Odendaal described it as a pivotal catalyst that paves the way for early development.
A slow permitting system
The award is significant in itself. South African mining right applications often take years to process because of limited capacity at the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR), and Southern Palladium had previously been granted an environmental permit for the project. As part of the process it has lodged an environmental guarantee with the DMPR.
Odendaal said the right would let the company complete its definitive feasibility study (DFS), fast-track the project execution plan and operational readiness, mobilise contractors for decline and box-cut works, and begin early works on site. The DFS is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Project in two phases
Bengwenyama lies next to the Modikwa mine, which is jointly owned by Valterra Platinum and African Rainbow Minerals. In July 2025, Southern Palladium revised its plan to build the mine in two stages, reducing peak funding to $279m from $452m.
The first phase targets 200,000oz of PGMs in concentrate a year. That compares with the October 2024 prefeasibility study, which envisaged a single-stage mine averaging 400,000oz a year over about 20 years.
Chrome is also becoming more important to the economics. In April 2026, the company doubled expected chrome recoveries to 65% from 30%, which it said equates to almost 400,000t a year of chrome concentrate from 100,000t a month of ore. Chairman Roger Baxter called the higher chrome potential particularly encouraging.
Why it matters
New PGM mines are rare in South Africa. The World Platinum Investment Council noted in May that Ivanhoe's Platreef was the first greenfield PGM project commissioned in the country since Styldrift in 2019. A phased, chrome-supported Bengwenyama follows the same template that companies such as Ivanplats and Tharisa are using: start small, keep the upfront capital manageable and expand once cash flows. Southern Palladium still has to secure funding, but it now has the tenure that financiers will require.
