Huayou ships Africa's first lithium sulphate from Zimbabwe

Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt has shipped the first lithium sulphate ever produced in Africa, sending a consignment from its Zimbabwe operation two months after the government froze exports of lithium concentrate.

Huayou's Zimbabwe subsidiary announced the shipment in a post on X late on 27 April, describing it as the first lithium salt made anywhere on the continent. The company did not say how large the consignment was, Reuters reported.

The plant

Huayou completed the $400 million processing plant at its Arcadia lithium mine in October 2025. It is designed to produce 50,000 tonnes a year of lithium sulphate, an intermediate product that refiners convert into lithium hydroxide or carbonate for battery cathodes.

The timing gives Huayou a significant advantage. Zimbabwe suspended concentrate exports on 25 February, citing malpractice, and has introduced a tax on concentrate that does not apply to lithium sulphate. A full ban on concentrate exports is scheduled for January 2027. Sulphate is therefore the only lithium product that can leave the country without restriction, and Huayou is currently its only producer.

Competitors still building

Other Chinese operators are racing to catch up. Sinomine Resource Group is building a sulphate plant at Bikita, and Sichuan Yahua started construction at Kamativi in February. Yahua, Sinomine and Chengxin Lithium, which owns the Sabi Star mine, have all received concentrate export quotas this month, and an official said Huayou's unit had been granted one too, according to Reuters.

Business Insider Africa described the shipment as a historic moment for the country's efforts to move up the battery value chain. Zimbabwe exported 1.13 million tonnes of spodumene concentrate to China in 2025, roughly 15% of China's concentrate imports, almost all of it in unprocessed form.

What to watch

The key question is scale. A single 50,000-tonne plant cannot absorb the output of a country producing more than a million tonnes of concentrate a year, and Huayou's facility is built around Arcadia's own ore. Until other plants are running, most of Zimbabwe's lithium will continue to depend on quotas. But the first export proves the chemistry works on Zimbabwean soil, which strengthens the government's hand as it holds the line on the 2027 deadline.
