GIADEC signs €300m Danieli deal for Ghanaian aluminium foil plant
Italian engineering group to build a Tema rolling plant and training centre as part of Ghana's downstream aluminium push

The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding worth €300m with Italian engineering group Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche in Accra in late June 2026, covering a proposed aluminium foil rolling plant and training centre within the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone.
A plant aimed at packaging and pharma
Under the proposed investment, Danieli plans to build a rolling plant capable of producing between 40,000 and 45,000 tonnes of aluminium foil a year, serving packaging, pharmaceutical, food-service and industrial customers. The agreement, signed at the residence of the Italian ambassador, also includes a Centre of Excellence intended to train Ghanaian workers and develop local technical capacity in aluminium processing.
Moving down the value chain
"[This] is a demonstration of the corporation's commitment to partner with international technology providers to position Ghana as an emerging aluminium manufacturing hub in West Africa," said GIADEC chief executive Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah. The Danieli deal represents a step further down the aluminium value chain than most of GIADEC's other partnerships, which have focused mainly on mining and refining rather than finished downstream products such as foil.
Part of an integrated industrial park
The proposed foil plant would sit within a planned integrated industrial park at Tema, envisioned as a hub bringing together aluminium smelting, rolling and downstream fabrication in one location — a model intended to capture far more value locally than exporting bauxite or even semi-processed alumina. If realised, it would give Ghana a finished aluminium product for export or domestic use, rather than only raw or intermediate materials.
What happens next
The agreement is a memorandum of understanding rather than a binding investment commitment, meaning detailed engineering, financing and construction timelines still need to be agreed. Its progress will be an early indicator of whether Ghana's aluminium strategy can move beyond mining agreements to attract the kind of downstream manufacturing investment that would distinguish it from bauxite exporters such as Guinea.
